Frequently Asked Questions
What is osteopathy?
Osteopathy is a form of hands on health care that uses a comprehensive system of diagnosis and treatment to treat pain and discomfort. Osteopaths take a holistic approach to getting you better by focusing on re-balancing the structural and functional integrity of the whole body by not only relieving your symptoms but treating the cause. We take a multi-layered approach to health by assessing and treating the various systems of the body. Recalibrated Osteopaths look at how the muscular-skeletal system integrates with other systems of the body such as the nerves, blood and lymphatic circulation as well as internal organs. Understanding the relationship between the various systems allows us to devise a treatment plan accordingly, which may involve various techniques.
As you may already know, poor posture, repetitive strain injuries, pregnancy or age related changes can lead to pain and discomfort. Recalibrated Osteopaths will help you manage your pain by assessing the mechanical imbalances present on your body’s framework. We therefore, not only work on the area of pain but also the surrounding structures that could possibly be contributing to the initial problem. This holistic approach allows us to provide you with a faster recovery period.

Is osteopathy safe?
Osteopathy are primary health care providers and are able to identify cause and effect of various musculoskeletal injuries and other health conditions. An Osteopath is trained to identify any risks associated with particular treatment techniques. If there are risks associated with your condition we will explain these clearly and if necessary we will refer you to another health specialist. The techniques Osteopaths use are all hands on and are very safe, gentle and effective. We do not use any machines. Remember - we not only treat the symptoms, but the cause of your pain and discomfort.
Everybody is unique and responds differently to various treatment styles. Your osteopath is trained to select the best type of treatment for you. The treatment style used is personalised to your needs, as what works for some others may not work for you. We will always endeavour to work within your comfort levels.

What happens during the initial consultation?
At the initial consultation you will be asked a series of questions related to your complaint. We will ask questions that help us gain a full understanding of what is going on. You will also be asked a series of questions related to your general health and other systems of the body. This will allow us to gain a full understanding of your health and the complexities (if any) that are contributing and maintaining your health ailments. This will be followed up by a series of clinical orthopaedic tests, which will allow us to come to a diagnosis, and formulate a treatment plan and management plan.

What should i wear to the consultation?
We ask that you wear loose fitting clothes (shorts and a t-shirt) as the physical examination and treatment procedures require a bit of moving around. Tighter clothing will restrict your joint range and make it harder for us to see what is going on. In some instances, you may be asked to remove certain items of outer clothing to enable better access to these areas. We will always respect your modesty and will always provide you with a towel or blanket to cover yourself.
How many osteopathic treatments do i need?
The number of treatments you need is specific to you. Some injuries heal more quickly than others. Your osteopath will explain your injury or the reason for your discomfort and devise a treatment plan accordingly. In most cases, people feel pain relief in just one or two treatments. However, in some cases things do take a little longer. In such cases, we do our best to give you practical advice to help speed up your recovery.
At your initial consultation your osteopath will give you an estimate on the number of treatments you require. Then at follow up consultations you will be reassessed each time to see how you are progressing. We want you to get better quickly, and will do our best to get you Remobilised, Realigned and Recalibrated in the shortest amount of time.

x-rays & ultrasounds: do i need one?
In most cases, people don't require an x-ray or ultrasound. However, if we feel that it would be useful in aiding our diagnosis and the management of your condition we will then refer you for imaging.
